If you get an error you are probably using the wrong client version for the server and you need to downgrade / rollback to the previous version. In the future, do not update to the newest version before trying to connect to the server.
Download previous version:
Zip:http://www.sendspace.com/file/96dgdt *Contains minecraft.jar
How to downgrade (for Windows):
Hit the Start button. Click inside the white search box.
Type: %AppData%\.minecraft\bin
A folder will open.
Copy over the minecraft.jar from the download above into the folder that just opened, and overwrite the existing file.
Now you can play! Go run the Minecraft.exe file that you normally do.
Minecraft crashes/closes/blackscreen?
Delete your /bin and /texture folders inside of the .minecraft folder.
Start MC again, update, then downgrade as noted above.
Updating when we move to the new version:
Go to your minecraft folder in step #2 above, and delete the "version" file. Then run Minecraft.exe and update the client to the new version. You will now be able to connect to the new version of the serve
